Say Goodbye to Lag: Cranberry Communications' Guide to a Faster Windows 11

Is your Windows 11 PC feeling sluggish? You're not alone. Many users experience lag or slow performance, often due to accumulated temporary files, unused programs, or outdated drivers. The good news is you can significantly boost your computer's speed with a few simple tweaks and regular maintenance, often without needing costly hardware upgrades.

At Cranberry Communications, we want to empower you with the knowledge to optimise your Windows 11 experience. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you supercharge your system:

1. Give Your PC a Fresh Start: Restart Your Device

A simple restart can work wonders. It refreshes your system, closes unnecessary background processes, and can even resolve minor technical glitches by resetting underlying processes and drivers.

  • Click the Windows icon on your taskbar or press the Windows key on your keyboard to open the Start menu.
  • Click the "power" icon.
  • Select "restart."

2. Stay Up-to-Date: Update Your System Regularly

Keeping your Windows 11 updated is crucial. Updates often include vital bug fixes, driver improvements, and ensure your built-in anti-virus software is current, all contributing to better performance and security.

  • Click the Windows icon on your taskbar or press the Windows key on your keyboard to open the Start menu.
  • Type "updates" and select "Check for updates" when it appears.
  • In the Windows Update menu, click "Check for updates" to see if any are available. Windows will typically begin downloading them automatically.
  • Once updates are downloaded, click "Restart now" to install them immediately, or "schedule the restart" for a more convenient time.

3. Take Control of Startup: Disable Auto-Starting Apps

Many applications are configured to launch automatically when you turn on your PC, which can significantly slow down your boot time and overall system responsiveness.

  • Click the Windows icon on your taskbar or press the Windows key on your keyboard.
  • Type "startup" and select "Startup Apps" when it appears.
  • You'll see a list of apps set to start automatically, along with their impact on startup (low, medium, or high).
  • To prevent an app from starting automatically, click the "On" toggle next to it to set it to "Off." Focus on disabling apps with "Medium impact" or "High impact," but also consider "Low impact" apps you rarely use. Don't worry – disabling them here only stops them from opening automatically; they'll still work perfectly fine when you launch them manually.

4. Reclaim Your Space: Free Up Storage

Over time, temporary files and unused applications can accumulate and consume valuable disk space, impacting your PC's performance.

Freeing Up Temporary Files:

  • Click the Windows icon on your taskbar or press the Windows key on your keyboard to open the Start menu.
  • Type "storage" and select "Storage settings."
  • Click "Temporary files."
  • Windows 11 will pre-select certain file types. You can safely select items like "Recycle Bin," "System error memory dump files," and "Delivery Optimisation Files." (Always double-check your Recycle Bin before emptying it!).
  • To delete the selected categories, click "Remove files" at the top of the page, then "Continue" to confirm.
  • For other drives, go back to the main Storage settings page, click "Advanced storage settings," then "Storage used on other drives." Select the drive you want to clean up. Be cautious here and primarily focus on deleting "Temporary files" or items in the "Recycle Bin."

Uninstalling Unused Apps:

  • Click the Windows icon on your taskbar or press the Windows key on your keyboard to open the Start menu.
  • Type "storage" and select "Storage settings."
  • Click "Apps & features."
  • You'll see an alphabetical list of your installed apps. You can sort them by "Size" to easily identify larger applications you might no longer need.
  • To uninstall an app, click the three dots to the right of its name, then click "Uninstall." Confirm by clicking "Uninstall"again on the prompt, and follow any additional instructions.

5. Streamline Your Interface: Disable Visual Effects

If your computer isn't the most powerful, fancy visual flourishes like transparency and animation effects can put a strain on your hardware and slow things down.

  • Click the Windows icon on your taskbar or press the Windows key on your keyboard to open the Start menu.
  • Type "visual" and select "Visual effects" when it appears.
  • On the list of effects, if "Transparency effects" and "Animation effects" are set to "On," click their toggles to set them to "Off." This can make a noticeable difference in responsiveness on less powerful machines.

By following these steps, you can significantly improve the performance of your Windows 11 PC and enjoy a smoother, faster computing experience. Give these tips a try and see the difference!
